BUSINESS OF THE DAY: What's it Made Of?
TODAY'S AGENDA
Find an object in your house. Talk through all the pieces and parts that go/went into making that respective object.
THE PRESENTATION SLIDE WITH TODAY'S OBJECTIVES: Why You're Doing This
- Help your child understand that there are pieces and parts that make up the items in your home. Each piece or part has to be built/come together to make an item whole.
- Grow your child’s awareness that someone or something (a person, a machine, or a computer) in a plant or factory works to take all the different pieces and put them together to make the object.
- Talk through where (city, state, or country) things are manufactured.
- Introduce the idea of quality production/manufacturing.
THE FAMILY CONFERENCE CALL: Questions to Talk About Together
- Where do you think “X” component comes from? (Example: If this item is a book, where does the paper for a book come from? Where is it bound together? What pieces, parts, or materials are necessary to “bind’ a book?)
- How do you think the pieces all came together? By hand or machine?
- Is this item made to a quality standard? How do we know? How can you tell?
- Can you tell where this item was made? (Hint: Look for a ‘Made in ______’ tag or sticker.)
STOCK TIP
Parents, here are a few “item” ideas you could try: a soccer ball (components: stitching, leather, print, blow-up hole, air, etc.); a purse (strap, leather, metal, buckle, zipper).
