BUSINESS OF THE DAY: Total Savings

TODAY'S AGENDA

At the end of your grocery shopping, ask the attendant or check the receipt for how much you saved as part of your grocery rewards program.

THE PRESENTATION SLIDE WITH TODAY'S OBJECTIVES: Why You're Doing This

  • Provide an opportunity for your child to read the receipt and familiarize himself or herself with what information is on a receipt, and how you know how much money you saved – either with coupons for a store’s saving card.
  • Teach your child that a store will mark certain items on sale every week, and sometimes, every day, to save customer’s money and move product off the shelves.

THE FAMILY CONFERENCE CALL: Questions to Talk About Together

  • In looking at the receipt, how much money did we save this trip? How much money did we save this year?
  • What was the most expensive item on the list? What was the least expensive item?
  • Why do you think grocery stores put certain items on sale?
  • How do we know when a grocery store puts something on sale?
  • If our family never eats pineapple, but we notice that pineapple is on sale, would we buy pineapple? Why and/or why not?

STOCK TIP

Parents, while you’re shopping, talk to your child if any items in the store are marked with a special rewards program savings that day. Explain the importance of that card, where you keep that card, and how the store lets you know about savings that day.
