BUSINESS OF THE DAY: You Can Bank on It!

TODAY'S AGENDA

In this new age, a lot of us have come to rely on online banking services. Cozy up around the computer, log into your online checking or savings account, and walk your child through the numbers and the services available with online banking. (STOCK TIP: Please make sure to delve into this in the safety and security of your home. The last thing we want for you is a coffee shop full of patrons ‘in’ on your online banking activity.)

THE PRESENTATION SLIDE WITH TODAY'S OBJECTIVES: Why You're Doing This

  • Introduce your child to the idea of continually “checking in” on your banking via the bank’s secure website.
  • Give your child the chance to ask questions about the bank, banking (in general), and what you’re looking at and for when you access your account online.
  • Show your child a transaction he or she witnessed in person, so he or she can see the appropriate numbers and how said transaction either added to or subtracted from your bank account.

THE FAMILY CONFERENCE CALL: Questions to Talk About Together

  • When we family did an activity together the other day, did it add or subtract from the account? (Hint: Look for subtraction signs).
  • Point to a certain line item and talk through it. (Example: what happened here on this day? It looks like we spent $20. Do you see that? What do you remember we did that day? Does $20 sound correct?)
  • Can you point to places where the money got bigger? Why or how do you think we “added” that money into our account?

STOCK TIP

Parents, don’t be afraid to use words like “transaction” with your child. When you do, just help define it with simpler terms. Transaction = when we spent money going to get ice cream the other day. It’s only a scary word if you make it a scary word. And it only becomes a regular part of their vocabulary if you make it a regular part of their vocabulary.
