BUSINESS OF THE DAY: Tag! You're It!

TODAY'S AGENDA

Grocery shopping. We’ve all got to do it. And this particular trip is two-birds-one-stone as it is intended to be a family, learning experience. Go to the grocery store as a family. While you’re shopping, ask your child to identify three different types of price tags. (OPPORTUNITY: Depending on age and experience, your child might require prompting. You will likely need to do so for younger children.)

THE PRESENTATION SLIDE WITH TODAY'S OBJECTIVES: Why You're Doing This

  • Show your child to how shoppers (i.e. parents) know how much a particular item costs.
  • Introduce your child to the idea that each item for sale has a price.
  • Talk about why one item costs more or less than another item.
  • Identify price tags and how companies/stores print them in a variety of different shapes and sizes.
  • Let’s be honest – keep ‘em busy, learning, and engaged as you shop.

THE FAMILY CONFERENCE CALL: Questions to Talk About Together

  • What color is the price tag or label or sign?
  • Why are some bright yellow? Why would a store want to draw more attention to it? Or why is it in red to show it’s on sale? Why is that important?
  • What numbers do you see?
  • Why does one price tag have a bigger number on it than another?
  • Which price tag was your favorite. Why?

STOCK TIP

Parents. Hey. Don’t worry. You do not have to be perfect in your analysis of the situation. You’re grocery shopping and teaching. #multitasking Think it through, and discuss the topic as it makes sense to and with your child. And cut yourself some slack - you don’t have to be exactly “right” either. Just use sound reasoning to help your child understand basic concepts about pricing, price tags, and cost/cost structure. You’re growing educating consumers here, but it’s got to make sense for your family.
