BUSINESS OF THE DAY: Stock the Store!

TODAY'S AGENDA

Walking around at the grocery store, talk about the items on shelf. You’ll notice some shelves or displays have “holes” where a lot of customers have grabbed that product to buy, and other shelves or displays are fully stocked. Then, talk to your child about how the boxes or bags or cans made it to the shelves.

THE PRESENTATION SLIDE WITH TODAY'S OBJECTIVES: Why You're Doing This

  • Help your child make the connection that items don’t just appear in the store and in the right place. It is someone’s job to put them in their appropriate place.
  • Initiate a general conversation with your child about the idea of shipping, distribution, and merchandising.

THE FAMILY CONFERENCE CALL: Questions to Talk About Together

  • How do items get on the shelves at the grocery store? Who is responsible for that?
  • When do you think they put the items on the shelf? When the store is busy or quiet?
  • When do you the store is the quietest? When do you think it’s the busiest? How can you tell?
  • Before the items are on the shelf, how do the items make it to the store?

STOCK TIP

Parents, if your child is older, encourage him or her to ask a grocery store employee or manager some questions. Also, feel free to stop and watch an employee stocking the shelves.
