BUSINESS OF THE DAY: Shrink that Bill

TODAY'S AGENDA

First, come together as a family to find ways to cut energy costs. Make a list and put it to action! Then, after a month of enlisting the family to cut energy costs, pull out the energy bill and review it with your child. Talk through any graphs, numbers or pictures with a simple explanation and a brief comparison to last month’s bill.  Show him or her a bill from an opposite season. Example: If it’s summer, show them a bill from winter, and vice versa, to show how costs change.

THE PRESENTATION SLIDE WITH TODAY'S OBJECTIVES: Why You're Doing This

  • Expose your child to the concept of bills and comparing bills month-over-month.
  • Create conversation to increase awareness about how energy costs money.

THE FAMILY CONFERENCE CALL: Questions to Talk About Together

  • Which month was the most expensive? Why?
  • How much do we owe this month? Last month?
  • •What are some new things the family can do to save money on energy?

STOCK TIP

Parents, if you do a check payment or an online payment, allow your child to join you as you go to pay your bills! If you pay different bills in different ways, walk your child through why you do that.
