BUSINESS OF THE DAY: Running on… a learning opportunity.

TODAY'S AGENDA

The car needs gas. So, head to the gas station! Show your child how you know the car is on empty or running low on gas, and speak in terms of how many gallons of gas you’re going to need to buy today. Fill the car with gas, and use this experience to teach and relate the gallons of gas needed with how much you had to pay today.

THE PRESENTATION SLIDE WITH TODAY'S OBJECTIVES: Why You're Doing This

  • Introduce your child to quantities using “gas” language – how much does one “gallon” cost.
  • Familiarize your child with her with the total payment (or amount due) printed at the bottom of a receipt.
  • Discuss with your child how everything costs money - even driving.

THE FAMILY CONFERENCE CALL: Questions to Talk About Together

  • What other things cost the same amount as “filling up” the car with gas?
  • Can they find the total amount on the receipt? What does that number mean?
  • How many other people or families are “filling their cars” with gas at the same time?
  • Do you think a bigger car needs more gas? Will that cost more money or less money? Why?

STOCK TIP

Parents, this is a personal favorite. Play a guessing game with your child to see who comes closer to how many gallons the car will take that day and/or how much it costs.
