BUSINESS OF THE DAY: I Spy… Advertisements!

TODAY'S AGENDA

Find four different marketing/advertising techniques. Such techniques may include (and are not limited to) radio ads, billboards, website banners, ads printed on the sides of trucks/vans/cars. As you’re spending time together, encourage your child to look around to see or to listen for any messages (“advertisements”) around them.

THE PRESENTATION SLIDE WITH TODAY'S OBJECTIVES: Why You're Doing This

  • Help your child to see that companies and business “talk to” and communicate with consumers in a variety of ways to persuade us to buy or use their company and/or business.
  • See a variety of visual displays and graphics for different products and services companies want to sell.

THE FAMILY CONFERENCE CALL: Questions to Talk About Together

  • Which advertisement caught your attention quickly? Why did that ad catch your attention?
  • What do you like about advertisements or commercials?
  • If it’s a print ad, how would you describe that particular ad’s lettering, pictures, and/or use of color?
  • Why do you think that ad or a commercial is important to someone’s business?

STOCK TIP

Parents, ease into the conversation by “cue-ing” it up a wee bit. Example: “Johnny, I see someone trying to sell us some ice cream! How are they trying to sell us ice cream? Do they have a sign or pictures? Do they have music so we hear them coming?” P.S. Be smart about the examples you want to use. We will not be held responsible if Johnny then asks for ice cream an hour before dinner.
