BUSINESS OF THE DAY: Coin Captain!
TODAY'S AGENDA
At home, lay out a pile of coins. Pull out a quarter, dime, nickel and a penny. Talk through the images and symbols on each coin’s face. It is helpful to have a sheet of paper with the amounts written out – 25c, 10c, 5c, 1c. Ask your child to organize the coins by separating them out according to how much each coin is worth.

- Teach your child to identify the intricacies of a coin and what makes each coin different.
- Learn the idea of “amounts” and “worth” using terminology like “greater than” and/or “less than”.
THE FAMILY CONFERENCE CALL: Questions to Talk About Together
- Can you put these coins in the correct order from smallest amount (cents-wise) to biggest amount (cents-worth)?
- Whose picture is on each coin?
- How is that person significant to American history? Why would the Treasure choose to put that respective person’s face on that coin?
- In what year was the coin created or “minted”? Using a calculator, find the number of years difference between this year and the year the coin was created or “minted”?
STOCK TIP
Parents, try some mock exchanges where your child can buy something for you for a certain amount. With older children, you can go the second step by giving change back to your child.
